Throughout the month of July, we have explored throws and gripping situations off of the double collar grip. The double collar grip can be used as an effective way to prevent our opponents from closing space or level changing as well as a position to execute big throws and trips, even without a sleeve grip. Below are three very different study examples for situations off of the double collar.
Kosei Inoue, hitting a running o uchi gari off of a double inside collar grip on his brother at the All Japan Championships in 2004.
Shohei Ono hitting his signature o soto gari from an unorthodox double collar grip. Shohei Ono is famous for developing this specific version of o soto gari, which he executed at the highest level, becoming a double Olympic gold medalist.
Inbar Lanir, current world champion at 78kg uses the double collar grip to keep her equally powerful opponents at a distance. In the last throw in the video, she executes a hip throw from the double collar against a very formidable Japanese opponent.
For August, we will have a less concrete theme: moving with intention. We will cover footwork, movement, and timing drills. See everyone in class!
